I get many questions as to how i stage my food photography so here it is. I have included a few tips and pointers for you to think about when staging your own food photography.
I am not technically minded so if you want lots of info on Aperture, Shutter Speed, Exposure, ISO, Color Temperature, Lenses,Focal Length etc for DSLR cameras this is not the article for you. There are many websites out there such as this one [link] and many articles on DA that go into such details. This is a general guide for basic food photography that even basic compact camera users who love or want to give food photography a go but do not love the technical mumbo jumbo could potentially learn a few things!
I am a little embarrassed to admit i have had my canon 450d for 3 or 4 years now but still have not figured out how to use the manual settings. Instead i push the auto focus and other settings as far as it will go with the basic lens i have. I can not afford a macro lens, but desperately would love one as it would be perfect for food photography! Maybe one day when i have more time i might go on a small photography to learn all that stuff as i am visual learner but for now like a lot of people just can't.
EDIT: My auto focus is completely broken so i now have to do it manually!
I am no expert at food photography that's for sure. There are so many food photographers here on DA which have a lot more knowledge, better equipment and amazing props than i have. For me though half the fun is the learning process and having to improvise with my subject and surroundings. To be able to get that perfect image you have in your head onto camera is the most satisfying feeling for me, especially when i am no expert nor have the perfect equipment around me a studio has!
Finally, another reason i was inspired to write this was because of a community volunteer who looks after the photography category of DA. Kaz-D decided to create a still life photography group which i am very proud to have been asked to be co-founder of. We will be sharing many awesome still life photos and other peoples tips of how to improve, inspire and raise more awareness of the still life section of Deviantart.
Now then if you are wanting a tasty subject to try out these tips on, why not check out some of my recipes!
you (or whoever's around the food) must be very patient.. I would have taken a bite out of whatever food was in front of me before thinking "crud.. I cant take the photo anymore "
oh wow! thanks for this! It helps a lot! I have lots of issues with photography... which is strange because one of my brother is a photographer and the other one works with cameras for movies! LOL!
