Orange cakes baked in orange cups! Served with a sauce made from the orange flesh to either pour over the cakes or as a dip for the "orange segments" oh and they are gluten free too.

I have long loved the idea of setting jello in oranges but since then I have seen it done so many times that I wanted to try something different. This was so much fun, the kids loved it, you can peel them like oranges and nibble off all the cake that gets stuck to the skin or use a spoon to eat out of the cups or like i said before segment them and dunk into orange or chocolate sauce.

I won't be doing a tutorial for this, no time for it. Just hollow out some oranges with a spoon, fill with your favourite cake mixture or you can use my recipe for sponge cake below and bake like cupcakes (or get your little helpers to do the mixing for you while you sort out the oranges!)

Be aware the cake mixture takes longer to cook than normal due to the moisture of the oranges. As for the sauce throw the juice of the orange and some sugar to taste together in a pan, then lightly boiled to thicken while the cakes bake. Don't like oranges? try lemons or limes!
UPDATE: Some people have found the cake too bitter around the edges where it has contact with the skin, this is where a dark chocolate sauce would be great to use to balance out the bitterness. If you hate any bitterness at all you could always line the oranges with baking parchment before adding the mixture. Also do not overfill the oranges, 1/2 to 3/4 full depending on your cake recipe will be plenty.

it was a lot of fun the make, a lot of people who have made it so far how foud it to taste very bitter around the edges so it is best served with a chocoalte sauce or to line the oranges with foil or such before adding your mixture.
