Feature Time: Poppy Day

Sat Nov 10, 2012, 11:54 PM

Remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognized as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. Hostilities formally ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month," in accordance with the Armistice, signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning. ("At the 11th hour" refers to the passing of the 11th hour, or 11:00 a.m.) World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.

The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Here we celebrate it tomorrow on Monday. And as the wife of a serviceman I thank you for your recognition. Poor guy doesn't ever get the holiday off since he is in the honor guard, and Veterans Day is all about the memorials, parades, etc.

My husbands brother is in the army, his mum hated it when he first joined, so scared when he went to Afghanistan yet not happy he is wanting to leave the army next year as it has turned a cocky, lazy 18 year old boy into a 21 year old gentleman, your husband must be a wonderful man.

:) I think so! And who doesn't love a man in uniform! LOL. Also, it got him to change his horrid hairstyle.. Seriously, it was so bad when we were dating (pre Air Force) that I almost never went out with him >.< Luckly for him I liked him for his pesonality, not his hair hehe. He's only been with the military for about a year now (joined when he was 24) so we have 5 more years of enlistment before we can consider leaving to continuing. I grew up with my dad in the army when I was a kid (actually lived in England for most of my childhood haha) so I know military life :)

Yeah... It can be tough, there's a lot of things you are expected to know! And if you don't like the idea of moving then don't even consider it LOL

it sure is! my husbands brother is in the army, he was in Afghanistan last year, a very hard time for his family even though he was in base most of the time being a mechanic you never know what can happen out there.

That definitely sounds hard. I don't know that I could be an army wife. I need to know that my husband comes home every day.
